Our speaker today was Georgette Cobbs, MFT.  She spoke to us on “Cultural Sensitivity and Competency Training.”

Georgette began with several open-ended questions that made us be insightful.  Then she gave us several useful definitions.  The word “culture” was termed as “a range of learned human behavior patterns.”  She described “cultural competency” as “the ability of one culture to understand, communicate, operate, and provide effective services to people of another given culture.”

She related educational data as applied to much of her own background and experience.  Currently she works with an adolescent population in various parts of Oakland.  There is vast diversity, about which we heard numerous details without any professional violation of confidentiality.

She then distributed a vignette containing a case scenario.  Much group discussion and suggestions for solutions were given by our members.  In closing Georgette urged us to look inside ourselves.  Are we always aware of our biases?  Do we categorize and pre-judge?
